What a great hobby and what a great experience to meet new friends like this. It was totally amazing that total strangers would be invited to experience turbine jet flight with the AMA card as the only requirement. In addition to Tom obtaining his waiver, the folks from Boomerang RC Jets set up a buddy box and invited members to fly. Several invited pilots were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, but an open invitation is extended to come fly any time. Sharing our wonderful field with the public and other AMA members is one way to keep the hobby alive. ESAC currently hosts an annual Control Line event and two IMAC competitions during a normal year. It has long been a club goal to share the wide open field with as many AMA hobbyists as possible, and hosting a Jet Event was the latest effort. Larry Roper of Boomerang RC Jets and Steven Goler District 1 AVP) were in attendance all the way from Maine. The club now has 4 Turbine Waiver pilots with Tom Perkin being the latest to join the ranks flying his qualifying flight at the event with Andy Kane, CD/Turbine Waiver holder and Dennis Blades, Event coordinator/Turbine Waiver holder providing the required signatures on the Waiver Application. The Capital Wing and Delaware Aviation Museum Foundation are both non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations and are staffed entirely by volunteers. For a $2 per person donation to the non-profit Capital Wing, anyone can walk on the wing of the largest single-engine bomber of WWII, look in the cockpit, and take a photo with one of the most unique aircraft ever to fly with the US Navy and Marines. The Capital Wing will set up its one-of-a-kind “Wing Walk” on its General Motors TBM Avenger torpedo bomber. A food truck will be on site both days.Įver wanted to walk on the wing of an airplane? Or see what the cockpit of a WWII torpedo bomber looks like? You can do both at the Warbird Showcase. The Capital Wing will have a B-26 machine gun turret on-site (yes, the kids can climb inside it) as well as its “PX” (Post eXchange) trailer selling warbird-related aviation-themed items. In addition, a number of 1930s-era Ford Model A cars will be on display. On static display will be two unique aircraft: the world’s only flying Fuji LM-1 and a Christian Eagle sport bi-plane. There will be attractions for the entire family at the Warbird Showcase. Early booking is recommended as WWII Warbird rides typically sell out quickly. Ride prices start at just $50 for an “Inflation Buster” experience in the Stinson L-5 offering the passenger a quick flight around the airport. Flight seats not sold in advance will be available for sale on-site at the Warbird Showcase. The public will have the opportunity to purchase warbird rides in all the aircraft as a tribute to the thousands of men and women who built, serviced and flew them.Īdvance ticketing for any warbird is available online at. Warbirds scheduled to appear include a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, the B-25 Panchito, Stinson L-5 Sentinel, and Boeing PT-17 Stearman bi-plane.

The event is open from 10 AM to 4 PM each day with no parking or entrance fees.

The Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), in conjunction with the Delaware Aviation Museum Foundation (DAMF), will bring a Warbird Showcase to the Richmond area on Saturday and Sunday July 9 and 10 at the Hanover County Municipal Airport, Ashland, VA.
